Video Interview with Cary Parris of Dark Age Games
Despite my long-time interest in miniatures games I had somehow managed to overlook the existance of Dark Age Games. Much to my chagrin when I asked line developer Cary Parris if the game was a recent release he told me it was actually seven years old. In my defense, I was drinking the GW Kool-Aid for a lot of that time, but I still can’t believe that a game with such unbelievably cool minis has eluded me all these years.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors of the cataclysm clash with mutants and other strange creatures. The distinctive look of the minis is based on works by well-known artist Brom, and they all display his famed penchant for detailed design. One of the side benefits of having the game in circulation for so long is that all but two of the minis in the rules are available for purchase, so players aren’t stuck waiting for month or years for a key model to be released.
I was impressed by several things Cary told me about how Dark Age does business. For example, they price their minis primarily based on the cost of production (meaning mostly weight of metal) rather than on game utility like some other companies. Thus customers don’t end up paying outrageous prices for characters and other “special” models.
I was quite impressed overall by the very reasonable prices I saw on Dark Age’s mini. Even a huge multipart metal monster was priced around $30. The line also has several impressive resin kits, which I think we’ll be seeing more and more of if metal prices continue to rise.
Unfortunately there wasn’t a demo table so I didn’t get to check out the game itself, but based on what I saw I’m quite interested in learning more.
