Video Interview: Robert Kingery of Darkson Designs at Gen Con 09

Submitted by John Price on Monday, 17 August 20092 Comments

robIf I hadn’t already known of Robert Kingery’s military background  (he served in Iraq with the USAF as a combat videographer), I would have realized it within the first five seconds of meeting him. He has the quiet intensity and laser-like focus that are common traits shared by most of the servicemen I’ve known over the years.  He is an immediately engaging person, and as soon as we shake hands I feel completely at ease talking with him.

We had traded a couple of messages before the show to set up the interview, and Rob generously offered to set up interviews with Pulp Monsters owner Maciej Zylewicz and Kai Nesbit, the man behind the Anima Tactics miniatures game. Look for those interviews to go up very soon.

I was nervous and unsure of myself, being fairly new to the whole live interview scene. I’m a writer by nature, and I’m used to contacts by e-mail. I was having a bad day after having a previous interview destroyed by a technical fault, and the ensuing jitters must have showed on my face. Trained pro that he is, Robert took a couple of minutes to clam me down and give me a few useful pointers on interview technique that stood me in good stead for the rest of the con. Thanks, Rob.

His passion for the hobby in general and his game in particular rolls of him in waves like heat from an open oven door. Despite having delivered the same basic pitch untold times he still manages to make it fresh and new. Deep in my hindbrain the military history junkie I was in my youth stirs and begins demanding I buy some Nazi werewolves. I beat back the urge for now, but I know that I can’t long resist a game that has a Panzershrek-wielding gorilla in it.
