Video Interview: Maciej Zylewicz of Pulp Monsters

Submitted by John Price on Monday, 17 August 20092 Comments

morfPulp City creator Maciej “Morf” Zylewicz has a superpower of his own. He has the uncanny ability to instantly become your friend as soon as you meet him for the first time. I had walked by the Pulp Monsters booth a few times as previous shows and had read an interview or two, so I knew who he was and what he looked like, but we had never spoken before Rob Kingery of Darkson Designs introduced us. Yet as soon as he shook my hand and greeted me in his charmingly-accented English I felt like he was an old friend I just hadn’t seen in a long time.

As we walked back to the corner I was using as an impromptu interview studio I repeated a remark I had made to Rob about how much I loved the Panzershrek-wielding gorilla Darkson produces for their AE-WWII game. Maciej laughed and observed, “Monkeys make everything better, no?” I suppose I should have figured him for a fellow ape enthusiast considering the sizable simian faction in his own Pulp City game.

We chatted for a few minutes while I got set up to shoot the interview, and Maciej makes my whole con by mentioning that he reads The Screaming Alpha and enjoys the reviews. It turns out that he dislikes needlessly cruel “reviews” written by internet trolls as much as I do. A critical review is one thing, but he told me a story of a post he once read that said essentially “If X minis were sent to me for free I wouldn’t go down to the post office to pick them up.” That;s just being mean for no reason.

Maciej was very generous with his time in the middle of the con, and very patient and kind with a rookie interviewer, and I’d just like to thank him one more time.

Oh, and my apologies for the interruption of the video by the irritating Voice of Gen Con  PA. It blathered endlessly in the exhibit hall and intruded in a number of my interviews. Unfortunately, I don’t have the software to properly edit the clip. so you’ll just have to live with it. Sorry.

For a great deal more information on the Pulp City game, head over to their website.

Those interested in Frankenstein’s Womb, scripted by the great Warren Ellis and penciled by Maciej’s pal Marek Oleksicki can check out a preview here. It should be available at your local comic shop right now.

  • Thanks for the interview. Morf definitely has a great game going here and I’m excited to see it growing.

And for the record, you’re absolutely correct about his super power. On Thursday he approached me after remembering me from last year and took a moment to stop and say hello on Saturday. Very classy.

If you’ve not had a chance to try it out, the rules are for free online and the miniatures are top notch. Try it out!

I picked up the starters last year and bought some stuff this year. PC is a great game and I am glad I bought into it. Maciej is a great guy very personable, friendly, and fun to talk with. For that reason alone I plan to buy from him every year.
