Review: Jeanette the Ranger by Mannequin Miniatures
Finding just the right miniature for a fantasy RPG character can be tricky. Unlike sci-fi or modern settings, fantasy characters tend to carry a bewildering array of different weapons and wear a kaleidoscope of armors from robes to full plate mail. Fantasy players are also notorious for being extremely picky about having a mini that reflects their character as accurately as possible. Try to use a mini wielding a two-handed sword to represent a PC that uses a sword and shield and you’re likely to have a struggle on your hands.
That’s why I really like customizable minis like Jeanette, a ranger or fighter type mini from UK newcomer Mannequin Miniatures. She comes with a choice of left arms that include two different swords (one a bit longer than the other) and a shield. The white blob on the fig’s arm in the photos is blu-tac used to hold the various arms on temporarily while they were being photographed. The arms actually fit quite well into a good, deep hole in the mini’s shoulder, forming a snug joint that should hold well with just a little superglue or epoxy, even without pinning.
Considering the relative lightness or her armor, dual weapons, and long cloak, Jeanette strikes me as an agile, mobile ranger-type of fighter. Her dynamic pose reflects this well, with er cape swirling behind as she springs off a convenient rock brandishing her weapons fiercely. The drape and flow of the cape’s “fabric” is especially well-done.
The overall level of detail is pretty impressive. The lacings in her leggings and the buckles on her top and boots are all well-sculpted. Even the rock under one foot is excitingly chunky rather than just being a generic blob of green stuff. It’s also nice to see a female fantasy mini dressed in a practical adventuring outfit rather than the “traditional” Boris-style chainmail bikini.
The fig does have a couple of shortcomings. The weapons (as is all too often the case) are a bit oversized for their wielder. Even if it’s made of some kind of magical elf-metal, it seems unlikely that a slightly-built woman could wield a sword nearly as tall as herself with one hand.
The face is, sadly, the weakest part of an otherwise strong miniature. Half-lost in her hair it seems somewhat doughy and undefined, not to mention a bit oversized. This unfortunate flaw really diminishes the impact of an otherwise fine mini, and is the only reason why Jeanette missed a 4/5.

On the whole Jeanette is quite a decent minis. Easy customization, a dynamic pose and good overall detail make this a recommended figure despite the unfortunate face and minor issues with weapons and equipment. If the Alpha gave half-points, Jeanette would have gotten a 3.5, but I’ve resolved not to tinker with the five-point scale, so 3/5 it is by the narrowest of margins.
Pros: Dynamic pose, Good detail, Customization options
Cons: Lackluster face, Oversized weapons
Final Verdict: 3/5
