Review: Goblin With Mace by Mannequin Miniatures

Submitted by John Price on Friday, 22 May 2009No Comment

gobbo-2We don’t usually cover much fantasy gear here at the Alpha, but Tim Fitch from the UK’s Miniature Heroes website was kind enough to write in and offer me some nice minis for review so I said “Sure!”

All are the products of relatively new UK maker Mannequin Miniatures, and first up we have a “Goblin With Mace,” sculpted by Kev Adams. Gobbos are often treated as no more than animate scenery or tackling dummies in most fantasy games, which means that their minis often don’t receive the level of care and detail lavished on their more important and respected cousins, the orcs.

That’s certainly not the case here, with impressive detail evident throughout the fig. Muscles are well-defined through the neck and arms, and the wood grain on the shield is meticulously sculpted to show the grain on both front and back.

The head is equally well-done, featuring the belligerent expression and bulgy eyes one expects from a goblin. His fierce battle grimace shows individual-sculpted teeth, rather than the undifferentiated “picket fence” style so often seen in supporting players like gobos.

gobbo-1gobbo-3The goblin is part of a larger line of gobos armed with a variety of weapons from bows to spears to swords, priced at ₤1.50 each. That’s a pretty decent deal given the size and craftsmanship of the mini, though you would probably need quite a few to make a proper horde.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with this first offering. Fantasy really isn’t my genre, but it’s certainly one of the better gobos I’ve seen. I look forward to sitting down and painted the rest of my Mannequin Minis products, which will be reviewed here over the next couple of weeks.

Pros: Good detail

Cons: None to speak of

Final Verdict: 4/5

MSRP: ₤1.50
